The Break In....Part One

It was hot.  Really, really hot. I was 8 months pregnant and we had just decided a few days prior we would pay a friend of Adam's to rip out the duct work for our HVAC system underneath the house and replace it.  He was doing it a bit at a time everyday after work so we were without air conditioning.

We went to bed that night in little clothing. Actually, no clothing.  We had fans going in all corners of the room, and the windows wide open, and we still couldn't sleep from the heat.

We had barely been asleep for anytime. The door bell rings.  I sit straight up.  As usual, it takes Adam a few minutes to come to.  We both throw on a tshirt and stumble in to the living room and see the time on the cable box below the TV.  2:53.  Who would be ringing our door bell at this hour?

Adam looks through the peep hole.  "There's no one there".   We can hear the glass door creaking.  I lean over the sofa and peer through the blinds.  "He's covering the peep hole, Adam."  I watch for another second.  The man backs away from the door.

"Adam, I have no idea who this is, but he is naked."  "NAKED!?"  "Yes, he's naked."  By this point, the man can hear us talking through the door.

"Open the !*@#ing door!".  He is now pounding on our front door.

Adam replies "Dude, I can't let you in, your naked. I'm going to call the cops."

We both watch through the window as he walks to the edge of our yard and lays down in the grass.

Adam calls 911.   The operator asks for a description of the man.  "I promise the first naked guy you see walking the streets will be him."

The police arrive half an hour later.  At this point, he is nowhere to be found.    Adam closes all of the windows in the house with the exception of the double window in our office.

We switch sides of the bed so I am not next to the window and try to get some more sleep.   Adam falls right back to sleep and I lie awake staring at the ceiling for the next couple of hours.   Any noise in the house is muffled by the fans blowing around us in our room.

Suddenly, I find myself sitting straight up in bed again.  This time it's a little bit past 5.  I say softly to Adam "he's in the house".
